Mijas

Mijas is the municipality with over 80,000 inhabitants, consisting of the idyllic mountain village of Mijas Pueblo – the beaches and fine residential areas of Mijas Costa and La Cala de Mijas – as well as the more modern Las Lagunas district just west of Fuengirola. The area offers beautiful scenery, cozy village atmosphere in the mountains and lovely sandy beaches on the coast. In addition to shopping, gastronomy and urban life, the area offers lots of activities and attractions for its many visitors – not least the many well-groomed golf courses in the area. An area popular with the many Northern European tourists, visitors and residents, and an area with plenty of opportunity to find nice holiday homes, villas and apartments to suit your needs.

Historically, the area has roots dating back to the time of Phoenicians and Greeks. Since the year 900 BC there has been interest in the area of Mijas, due to its richness of the underground minerals, which created a very early mining operation, which sent valuable minerals to the East. Later, the Moors conquered the area and founded the city in 714. Only between 1487 – 1492, the Catholic kings gained power over the site that we know today as Mijas. The area was relatively isolated until around 1873, when a road was opened between Fuengirola and Mijas. It provided the basis for an increasing tourism, and in 1950 the first hotel opened in Mijas as a result of the new tourism on the Costa del Sol.

The ‘Sierra de Mijas’ mountain range rises majestically behind the coast, about 10 km inland. Located 430 meters above sea level, and situated between the beautiful hillsides and with an impressive view of the Mediterranean, we find Mijas Pueblo – also known as ‘the white village’. A true Andalusian gem.

The city’s old town is full of genuine Spanish charm, with the typical whitewashed Andalusian houses in old, winding streets – with terraces, gardens and cozy pubs, restaurants and cafes. A historic village where you easily get the feeling that time has stood still – and where you can still find something as valuable as peace and quiet.

The city’s park ‘Parque Muralla’ offers beautiful gardens set around a historic fortress, the beautiful church ‘San Sebastian’ and the old oval bullring encircling the park and offering perhaps the most beautiful views of the entire bay and the Mediterranean. If you are more into Spanish wine, the local wine museum – ‘Museo del Vino’ – is an excellent place to taste and learn about both local and national Spanish wines.

Mijas Pueblo is just a 20-minute drive from the coast, which is also connected by local buses. In Fuengirola, there is easy access to the train station, with good connections to both the airport and Málaga city center, with the coastal railway train departing every 20 minutes.

It is also here, on the coast, that you find Las Lagunas and La Cala de Mijas. Las Lagunas is the active city center that almost merges with Fuengirola, with lots of commerce, shopping and culture. Here you will find eg. theaters and sports centers, while La Cala de Mijas is a more independent area, beautifully situated by the sea, and with access to more than 12 km of beautiful sandy beaches and coastal promenade – for a wonderful holiday by the beaches of the Costa del Sol.
